How looks affect salary
They say you pretty much determine your own success. While this may be true to an extent, success also depends on how others perceive you. Inasmuch as we want to deny, a number of studies prove the looks has a say in advancing your career.
If you’re a 6-foot tall male
Harvard University reports that men who are at least 6’ earn an average salary of $5,525 more than their 5’5 counterparts. And based on a Fortune 500 poll, on the average, male CEOs were three inches taller than the average 6’ man.
If you’re symmetrical
If one of your eyes is smaller than the other, then that’s probably the reason why you’re getting a smaller paycheck. The more symmetrical a person’s features are, the more s/he is considered beautiful. And, simply, those attractive people in the workplace get more than everyone else.
If you smile a lot
Rick Wilson of Rice University explains that there’s a correlation between good looks and success. People tend to trust those who look better than the rest and those who smile often are deemed more trustworthy than people with straight faces.
But if you’re too attractive
There are industries that discriminate against beauty. Usually women are the ones being discriminated against, especially if the jobs are handled by men, such as being a manager of research and development, director of finance, mechanical engineer, and construction supervisor among others.
If you have great posture
A Harvard Business School study (“Power Posing: Brief Nonverbal Displays Affect Neuroendocrine Levels and Risk Tolerance”) assert that sitting in a position that oozes confidence – legs up on the desk, chest out, or leaning forward – will make people deem you powerful. Sitting in a “confident” position raises the testosterone levels by around 20% and lowers the stress hormone cortisol by the same. The reverse is also true. Thus, if you slouch or look weak, chances are, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage.
