Farm Subsidies: House Appropriations Committee Approves Cuts
June 1st, 2011 | Posted by Global InvestorsWASHINGTON — A House committee voted Tuesday to cut farm subsidies to pay for deficit reduction and other budget priorities, chipping away at the billions of dollars a year that are directed to farmers.
The votes in the House Appropriations Committee may be a preview of what is expected to be a tough year for agriculture programs. Congressional lawmakers have increasingly looked to billions of dollars in farm subsidies as a source of money for other priorities as crop prices have reached record levels.

House GOP Votes Down Clean Debt Limit Increase, Eyes Medicare In Deal
June 1st, 2011 | Posted by Global InvestorsWASHINGTON — Republicans are using the lopsided outcome of Tuesday’s failed debt ceiling vote as a means to push through Medicare reforms.
Not everyone was open to the idea, pushed by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), that a plan by Rep. Paul Ryan to privatize the program for future seniors remain “on the table” for debt limit talks. But what was clear from Tuesday night’s vote, in which a clean debt ceiling bill went down 318 to 97, was that GOP lawmakers felt emboldened to try to push entitlement reform yet again.
“There’s no way to get there without having some examination of the entitlement programs that we have,” Freshman Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said. “There’s no question that to get the House back in order, we’re going to have to do something revolutionary.”

White House Scandal On The Way, Says Math
May 31st, 2011 | Posted by Global InvestorsHey, America! Are you ready for some high-level presidential scandals? No, no, calm down. I have none to report. But what’s being reported is that one day — maybe someday soon! — there will be a scandal to report, and this can be totally proven with mathematics, thanks to political scientist Brendan Nyhan:
One of the least remarked upon aspects of the Obama presidency has been the lack of scandals. Since Watergate, presidential and executive branch scandal has been an inescapable feature of the American presidency, but the current administration has not yet suffered a major scandal, which I define as a widespread elite perception of wrongdoing. What happened, and what are the odds that the administrationâ??s streak will continue?
Wait, so that time Common read some poetry at the White House didn’t count as a scandal? Well, I bet a lot of people feel pretty foolish now.

Netanyahu ‘Went In Worried, Came Out Encouraged’ After White House Meeting, Official Says
May 20th, 2011 | Posted by Global InvestorsWASHINGTON — Benjamin Netanyahu went into the White House Friday “worried, but came out encouraged,” according to a senior Israeli official briefed on the prime minister’s frank meeting with President Barack Obama.
In a closed-door meeting and working lunch the Israeli leader “wanted to go on record in the presence of the president,” said the official, who is not authorized to speak publicly. During the talks, which went over-schedule and lasted more than two hours, Netanyahu told Obama “what are Israel’s red lines: No on refugees, no on negotiations with Hamas, and we cannot withdraw to the ’67 line, per se,” the official added.
Netanyahu, who has now held seven meetings with Obama — at least one of them far chillier than Friday’s talks. The pair later repeated the points they’d discussed in private to reporters.

Jon Huntsman Moves To Shed Obama Brand By Aligning With House GOP On Medicare, Debt Ceiling
May 20th, 2011 | Posted by Global InvestorsKEENE, N.H. â?? Former U.S. Ambassador to China and potential 2012 GOP candidate Jon Huntsman on Friday unequivocally aligned himself with House Republican leaders, saying he would have voted for Budget Chairman Paul Ryanâ??s Medicare privatization plan and endorsing Speaker John Boehnerâ??s hard public line on the federal governmentâ??s debt ceiling.
â??I would have voted for it â?¦ including the Medicare provisions,â? Huntsman said of Ryanâ??s (R-Wis.) budget plan — which passed the House with overwhelming GOP support just over a month ago — in an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that was conducted Thursday evening and aired Friday morning on â??Good Morning America.â?
As for raising the nation’s debt limit, â??What is really scary I think to me and I think most Americans is our debt. And we’ve got to be bold, and we’ve got to have, I think, proposals on the table that perhaps in years past would’ve been laughed out of the room,â? he said. â??We don’t have a choice. We’ve hit the wall.”
