For-Profit College Regulations: Obama Administration Issues Rules
June 2nd, 2011 | Posted by Global InvestorsThe Obama administration on Thursday issued a series of highly anticipated regulations aimed at cracking down on for-profit colleges and other career training programs that leave students saddled with unmanageable debts and contribute to an unequal share of federal student loan defaults.
The final rules issued by the Department of Education, however, are significantly less stringent than a draft version released last year, giving college programs an additional three years to come in line before possibly losing access to lucrative federal student aid dollars. The changes come after an unprecedented lobbying and campaign finance offensive over the past year by the for-profit college industry, which derives a vast majority of revenues from federal student loan and grant programs and has sought to protect that income by gaining influence in Washington.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan said the changes came after discussion with “lots and lots of different folks,” not just the industry, and he pointed out that the colleges were not unanimous in their suggestions for changes.

Mark Steinberg: Obama Reconsidering Second Run
May 30th, 2011 | Posted by Global InvestorsAt a press conference today, President Barack Obama shocked reporters when he said he might not run for a second term because he lacks fire in the belly. He hinted this might be attributable to the fact that his mother-in-law no longer cooks for the family.
In New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie also said he lacks fire in the belly. His explanation was that it had become impossible to light his belly without resort to a significant quantity of flammable substances, a fact that would likely prove counterproductive in a heated debate.
Former Governor Mike Huckabee, who has already declared himself out of the race, said he was relieved he lacked the required fire in the belly: “Fire is the symbol of Satan, and I’m not willing to dance with the Devil at my inauguration, especially because he’d want to lead.”

HuffPost TV: HuffPost’s Sam Stein Discusses Obama, Israel On ‘Hardball’ (VIDEO)
May 24th, 2011 | Posted by Global InvestorsHuffPost’s Sam Stein appeared Monday on MSNBC‘s ‘Hardball’ to discuss President Obama’s proposal for a two-state solution in the Israel.
Chris Matthews brought up recent Republican criticism of Obama’s proposal. Stein explained, “what we have here is a routine of Republicans trying to make Israel a wedge for Obama … for the Evangelicals, for wealthy Jewish Republican donors possibly. I went back, I looked at the ’08 speech that McCain gave at AIPAC. It was very similar in terms of its denunciation of Obama. Only in that case it was about Obama saying he wanted to talk to his enemies without preconditions. So this is a routine.”
Stein stated that “the border issue is like the easiest conceptual issue to argue about, it’s lines on a map.” He discussed how there are other much more complex issues to resolve, and he reiterated that Republicans are using the border issue “as a wedge to get at Obama and to drive support towards their camps.”
