Seth Curcio, Bradley Hyppa, Benjamin Meyer In ‘Pursuing a Calculated Distance’ (PHOTOS)

June 1st, 2011 | Posted by Global Investors

The show “Pursuing a Calculated Distance” with works by Seth Curcio, Bradley Hyppa, and Benjamin Meyer is an exploration of visual perception and the intensely intimate nature of sight. The concepts of each artist work well with one another even though they work across different media. The influence of Cubism and the art of Cezanne are visible to different degrees in the works of each of the artists, most readily apparent in the experimentation with the idea of spacial perception.

The artists explain their interest,

“Visual perception and sensation are intensely personal phenomena and though they can be described, their specific character and qualities remain ultimately unknowable in other people. No one can experience what another human being is experiencing.”

Seth Curcio work’s are alternately extremely large or quite small, physically demanding attention by the amount of space they consume. One of his works, “Spacial Descent,” is made up of twenty different views of the ocean, a piece that can viewed as either partitions or as a whole. Curio offers multiple views of one space, either as a part or as a whole.

Kara Walker ‘Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipi’s Blue Tale’ At Lehmann Maupin Gallery, NYC (PHOTOS)

May 31st, 2011 | Posted by Global Investors

The exhibition â??Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipiâ??s Blue Taleâ? at Lehmann Maupin Gallery is a collection of three new video works from Kara Walker. Though she is best known for her black and white paper cuts, Walker choose video as her medium for this project reflecting the cinematic quality of her work.

Walker is known for exploring gender, race, sexuality and identity in her works, particularly of the African American experience pre and post-Civil War. She takes what lies beneath a cultural myth or archetype and brings the underlying assumptions to the forefront in order to better understand identity. Walker, 41, received her degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and is currently living in New York City.

Walkerâ??s seventeen minute video â??Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipiâ??s Blue Taleâ? liberates shadow puppetry from its traditional use as pure entertainment and imbues it with the power of the moving image. There is an interest in what cannot be spoken, which she explores within the mythology of antebellum Southern female sexuality. The shadow puppets, an ancient form of storytelling, recount a historical period in a completely modern way, utilized to discuss a political mythology rather than to entertain. This exhibition expresses Ms. Walkerâ??s interest in narrative and storytelling particularly in the politics of narration and the role societal archetypes have in determining an audienceâ??s preconceptions. The explicit, surreal and often disturbing nature of â??Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipiâ??s Blue Taleâ? asks that the viewer consider what is beneath a cultural myth, and thus to question portrayals of this subject prior to Walker’s video.

Jaime Rojo & Steven Harrington: UK Street Artist HUSH, Blue Geishas And Graffiti Tags (PHOTOS)

May 30th, 2011 | Posted by Global Investors

UK Street Artist HUSH deftly synthesizes his adoration for graffiti tagging, Street Art aesthetics and eastern images of feminine beauty and sensuality.

In “Twin,” his show on view now at New Image Gallery in West Hollywood, he happily employs a mash-up process that borrows heavily from graffiti’s mark-making and dog-eared textures of urban decay, easily sliding back and forth between paint, collage, and de-collage to achieve his sense of balance.

10 Under-The-Radar Islands Of The World (PHOTOS)

May 28th, 2011 | Posted by Global Investors

Hollywood scouts were on to something when they skipped over Mykonos and chose a secret island in Greece as the location for Mamma Mia. The movie was a $600-million hit, in part because it fueled peoples’ fantasies of escaping to a secluded island (and yes, those catchy ABBA tunes didn’t hurt).

Surprisingly, that picture-perfect movie location, Skopelos, has stayed under the radar. There are still gems like Skopelos hidden all around the globe, if you know where to look.

Our friends at Travel +Leisure have done the requisite digging to find places you can truly unwind, from the rugged Chilean spot that inspired the novel Robinson Crusoe to a tiny island in the Caribbean that was virtually deserted for decades until a luxe resort opened in 2010.

Hong Kong Art Fair 2011 Showcases Work By Ai Weiwei, David LaChapelle (PHOTOS)

May 27th, 2011 | Posted by Global Investors

The 2011 Hong Kong Art Fair is larger than ever with 260 galleries participating in this year’s festivities which run through Sunday, May 29. While many of HK11′s programs seek to raise the profile of Asian artists and promote education, there is still an undercurrent of dissent surrounding the artists and the works exhibited this year.

Such controversial works include art by detained artist Ai Weiwei and David LaChapelle’s “Raft of the Medusa”-inspired “The Raft.” The inclusion of these works demonstrate how visible dissent is allowed to be in an controlled environment. Hong Kong differs from the rest of China in that it has a larger amount leeway with freedom of speech and expression, however Ai’s incarceration is a reminder that the Chinese government can take that freedom away.

Ai is a celebrated Chinese activist-artist who was arrested on April 3 on charges of tax evasion and destruction of accounting documents. Human rights activists are outraged claiming that the Chinese government uses these kinds of charges to arrest activist for political dissent. Mr. Ai has been an outspoken critic of the Chinese government and activists in Hong Kong have been protesting his imprisonment. His 2007 piece “The Marble Arm” is modeled after a series of photographs he took in 1995 of himself giving the finger to various centers of government in different countries, including China’s Tiananmen Square. “The Marble Arm” is true to its title; the disembodied arm with a shoulder and half a head was modeled after Ai’s own that is giving the finger to whatever happens to be in front of it. The use of marble is interesting due to the material’s connection with classical antiquity which itself is equated with democracy.

Karen Dalton-Beninato: New Orleans Wine and Food Experience Rolls Down Royal (PHOTOS)

May 27th, 2011 | Posted by Global Investors

Food in New Orleans is serious business as our chefs continue to rack up James Beard Awards (Emeril Lagasse, John Besh, Susan Spicer, Donald Link, Frank Brigtsen and Cochon’s Stephen Stryjewski). A New Orleans chef even has her own side plot in HBO’s Treme as scripted by Anthony Bourdain. Speaking of Bourdain, alcohol is also a top draw. New Orleans watering holes garnered 10 of Esquire’s top bars slots (Spotted Cat, Chart Room, Tujague’s, Napoleon House, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, Harry’s Corner, Fritzel’s European Jazz Pub, Coop’s Place, Carousel Bar, Hotel Monteleone, and Arnaud’s French 75 Bar).

So it’s no surprise that the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience has been growing exponentially. Here are 10 photos by Jeff Beninato of the NOWFE Royal Street Stroll kickoff. FIne wines were served at art and antique galleries, and food booths included Shrimp Regua from Antoine’s; Crawfish Etoufee over Cheese Grits from the Pelican Club; Barbecue Shrimp at GW Fins and Bourbon House; and the life changing Chargrilled Oysters from Drago’s.

Still ahead are grand tastings, vintner dinners, seminars and more. Details are available at the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience Web Site. Save room in your belly if you’re here. And if you’re not, it’s time to make reservations for NOWFE 2012.

Ratko Mladic Arrested: World’s Most Wanted Criminals (PHOTOS)

May 26th, 2011 | Posted by Global Investors

The arrest of Ratko Mladic, allegedly one of the world’s most prominent war criminals, is being hailed as a turning point for his native Serbia. One of Europe’s most wanted war crime fugitives, Mladic was on the run for more than 15 years after being indicted by the U.N. in 1995.

Of course, Mladic’s arrest comes just weeks after the death of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, which means two of the world’s most wanted men are now off the list.

So who’s left on the list? Take a look below:

Tom Mallory: Making Architecture Responsive: Cybernetic Buildings (PHOTOS)

May 26th, 2011 | Posted by Global Investors

As I set about writing on “interactive architecture” this week, I was struck by the semantic challenges and numerous connotations of “interactivity.” Nowadays we have grown accustomed to commonly using ‘Interactive Architecture’ to denote “the convergence of embedded computation and kinetics in architectural form with the intention to involve human and environmental responses.”

Much has been written on this intriguing contemporary trend and much more is to be expected in the future. Within a short period of time the technocratic version of interactive architecture has emerged as a detached design discipline with its own circle of active researchers like interactivearchitecture.org and designinginteractions.com to name a few. It is clear that modern technology is a key element to how we might define interactive architecture.

Therefore, why not address interactive architectural design in the broader sense of buildings’ ability to communicate? Architectural objects and spaces with the ability to respond hold greater appeal than their pragmatically constructed kin, much like a communicative person is easier to relate to. The examples I have picked to illustrate this are largely an attempt at covering the variety of interactive architecture; I have tried to attach some distinction between two types of behavior – “structural” and “media” interactivity.
